Frequently Asked Questions

What is the hurdy gurdy?

“The hurdy gurdy can be defined as a manually operated bowed string instrument with a wheel against which the strings vibrate; it also has a keybox with keys that operate tangents to shorten one or more strings momentarily to produce the melody...It is generally comparable to a violin, except that the wheel takes the place of the bow and the tangents take the place of the fingers in stopping the strings.” Susann Palmer, The Hurdy Gurdy

What do the different strings do?

There are three main types of strings on a hurdy gurdy. There’s the drone that plays a continuous note throughout playing. There’s the melody string that runs through the keybox that contains the tangents to create the notes of the melody. Then there’s the trompette that works like a drone but also operates the buzzing bridge or chien (dog).

Is the hurdy gurdy hard to play?

It really depends. Some people find it difficult and compare it to rubbing your stomach, patting your head, and jumping up and down on one foot. Previous music experience helps.

  • Dream it.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
